The Tale of The Corrupted King
What have you heard of the fall of the Kathabaskin Court? That doomed monarchy of demons and cursed courtiers. Did you listen to the stories blaming the trappings of foolish avarice? Or the hubris of rulers drowning in their own self importance? Familiar failings that ruined kingdoms countless…..
Simple explanations, but false.
History is written by the survivors, dear reader…. not the rulers erased. It was not incompetence or frivolity that destroyed the great city state of Memnoc, but a yearning even more potent.
Love.
A love that twists and turns and wraps itself around a constricted heart.
A selfish love that blinds and binds.
A love that desolates.
Where there is a King, so there must be a Queen. A Queen stolen from a distant kingdom, desired by all, a form so beguiling to be a trap for all powerful men but for her…... a gilded cage.
But can a caged thing ever love it’s jailer? Could a King be driven beyond the barriers of sanity desiring what power and fortune cannot obtain? His love returned?
And does not love make monsters of us all?
A Demon-King, forged in blood and fire, imbued with a magic extracted from rock and bone. Seeking out with his second-sight beyond the stars for a new power. A power strong enough to turn the heart of his Queen.
And find that power he did, but at what a cost. That unfathomable thing, hiding it’s horrible mass behind a distant sun, the only celestial body large enough to obscure its impossible form.
It had waited for eons. For a connection. And in our poor King it found a mind strong enough to receive its missives and a heart too weak to resist its burrowing tendrils. That creature-deity wormed and writhed it’s psychic energies into the flaws of his soul. Burrowing through his entrails and his brain. Transforming his flesh until nothing was left but bone, rags, and a multiplicity of curling thrashing tentacles.
It was this corrupted form that executed the near total extermination of the Kathabaskin Court. Delighting in destruction and feeding a far away master the mana of fear and the soul-spoils of genocide.
